College football: Weekend recap
The GIST: After a wild conference championship weekend, the four-team College Football Playoff (CFP) field is set: No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 Michigan, No. 3 Georgia and undefeated No. 4 Cincinnati (the first non–Power Five to make the CFP).
How we got here: We said wild conference champ weekend, and boy did we mean it. To kick things off, No. 3 Alabama won their 29th SEC title by handing then No. 1 Georgia their first loss of the year. Death, taxes and the Tide rollin’.
- Meanwhile, Cincinnati won their lucky number 13th game of the season, preserving their perfect record and clinching their second straight American Athletic Conference (AAC) championship.
- And Michigan rounded out the day with a Big Ten championship win, scoring 42 points while wearing No. 42 patches to honor high school football player Tate Myre, a victim of last week’s deadly school shooting in Michigan.
What’s next: We’ll have to wait until December 31st for the CFP semifinals to kick off (and our full preview to hit your inbox), but there are plenty of bowl games — featuring teams that didn’t make the CFP — to hold us over.
- From the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl to the Cheez-It Bowl to the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, all of your football and nutritional needs are covered. Dig in.
