Big yikes
The GIST: We hope your Monday is going better than the Eagles’ Sunday did. The Birds tacked on another loss when the New York Giants’ early lead proved too much to overcome.
🏈Dashed hopes: Despite a week’s rest and the return of a few key players, the Eagles were sluggish and sloppy. Not only did they fail to execute in key moments, but they also recorded 11 penalties on their way to a 27–17 loss.
What went wrong: Defensively, the Birds couldn’t stop the Giants’ running game as all three of their TDs — including Giants QB Daniel Jones’ opening-drive 34-yard touchdown run — came on foot. While defense usually isn’t the main struggle for the Eagles, it certainly was yesterday.
- That isn’t to say that the Eagles’ offense was perfect. They failed to convert a single third down and didn’t do a great job of protecting QB Carson Wentz, allowing three sacks.
What comes next: We understand, this isn’t the 2018 Birds. But letting the Giants win this convincingly is a new low. As far as playoffs go, the Eagles are still in control of the NFC East, but that won’t last long if future games look anything like yesterday. Yikes.
