NCAAW: Any given Sunday
The GIST: Less than a week into March and the madness is already in full force, with upsets, last second game-winners and trophies aplenty. How lucky are we?
The upset: Down goes No. 1! Thanks to Dre’una Edwards’ clutch go-ahead three-pointer with five seconds remaining, unranked Kentucky slayed the giant that is No. 1 South Carolina 64–62 yesterday to win their first SEC championship since 1982. Electric.
- This also marks the first time South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley has lost the SEC title game. Nevertheless, her Gamecocks are still expected to be the No. 1 overall seed in the national tourney. More fuel for the fire.
More champions: Three additional Power Five conference titles were awarded yesterday:
- Led by back-to-back ACC tournament MVP Elissa Cunane’s 17 points, No. 3 NC State defeated Miami 60–47 to three-peat as ACC champs.
- Despite an “off night” (18 points, seven rebounds) from Iowa’s Player of the Year candidate Caitlin Clark, the No. 12 Hawkeyes held on to beat No. 14 Indiana 74–67 and hoist their second Big Ten title in four years.
- Defending national champs No. 2 Stanford took care of business, routing Utah 73–48 to clinch the Cardinal’s 15th Pac-12 title. Wow.
What’s next: While conference winners get to rest comfortably knowing they’ve automatically qualified for the 68-team March Madness bracket, teams that fell short will be waiting on pins and needles for next Sunday’s Selection Show.
- And lucky for us, even more championship action is on deck this week. Tonight’s 8 p.m. ET Big East title game between No. 7 UConn and Villanova is a must-see matchup. Ball is life.
