The GIST: Tennis’ final Grand Slam of the season ushered in what feels like the start of something new, with two youngsters breaking through on the big stage. It feels so right…
Men’s: Carlos Alcaraz dug deep to defeat No. 2 Casper Ruud in four sets yesterday, nabbing his first career major title and a No. 1 ranking.
- The 19-year-old is now the first teenager to reach the top of the tennis world and first to win a major since his countryman No. 3 Rafael Nadal (the men’s Grand Slam record holder) did it in 2005. Decent company.
Women’s: World No. 1 Iga Świątek continued her season of dominance on Saturday, nabbing her second Grand Slam title of the year (and the third of her career) by downing No. 5 Ons Jabeur in straight sets (6-2, 7-5).
- The victory also marked the 21-year-old’s seventh singles win of the year, further cementing her status as the sport’s brightest star, especially as Serena Williams evolves away from tennis after this tourney.
