March Madness Selection Sunday Just a Few Days Away
Who’s in: No. 1 Gonzaga continued their undefeated season on Tuesday, defeating BYU 88–78 to win the West Coast Conference title and clinch their spot in March Madness. It was the ’Zags 23rd (!!!) consecutive win by a double-digit margin. Sheesh.
On the bubble: As the majority of the men’s conference tournaments wrap up this weekend, powerhouses like Duke and Michigan State — who haven’t missed the tournament since 1995 and 1997, respectively — are in danger of making the bad kind of history this year.
- Although Duke defeated Louisville 70–56 in the first round of the ACC tournament last night, they likely need to advance to at least the championship game to keep their March Madness hopes alive. Check here for the full ACC tourney schedule.
- Meanwhile, thanks to their regular season finale upset over rival No. 4 Michigan, Michigan State should earn an at-large bid, but the only surefire way to punch their ticket is a Big Ten tournament win. Anxiety, is that you?
What to watch: While many of the March Madness automatic berths on the women’s side were handed out last week, there’s still some business to wrap up this weekend. Don’t miss the Big Ten championship game Saturday at 2 p.m. ET and the Big 12 title game Sunday at 1 p.m. ET on ESPN 2. We’ll have all the hoops, please.
