D.C.: A Cinderella story
Georgetown MBB: To quote Georgetown head coach and NY Knicks legend Patrick Ewing’s favorite rapper: “started from the bottom now we’re here.” The Hoyas — picked to finish last in the conference in the coaches’ preseason poll — were crowned Big East champs on Saturday, taking down two nationally ranked opponents along the way. Blocking out the haters.
- Now, the Hoyas are dancing for the first time since 2015, setting up a March Madness first-round date with Colorado. It’s not quite Georgetown’s glory days, but we’ll take it.
UVA MBB: Meanwhile, UVA withdrew from the ACC Tournament on Friday due to a positive COVID-19 test, but still earned a 4-seed in yesterday’s selection show. The defending national champ ’Hoos should be able to suit up for their first round matchup against 13-seed Ohio.
WBB: Despite a scare in the quarterfinals, Maryland won another Big Ten championship with Saturday’s 104–84 domination over Iowa. Today’s selection show will reveal if the Terps get one of the four coveted No. 1 seeds in March Madness. Fingers crossed.
Over in the Atlantic 10 Conference, the VCU women held off UMass yesterday to claim their first ever A-10 championship and earn a March Madness bid for the first time since 2009. Making herstory.
