USWNT advances to CONCACAF semis
The GIST: And then there were four. After going undefeated in round robin play at the high stakes CONCACAF W Championship, the USWNT is on to tomorrow’s single-elimination semis. *bites nails*
What’s on the line: The CONCACAF W Championship determines which squads will compete in the upcoming 2023 World Cup and the 2024 Olympics. The USWNT already clinched one of the four World Cup spots up for grabs, but only the tournament winner will automatically qualify for the Olympics. No pressure.
Semifinal preview: The red, white and blue will face Costa Rica (the second-place finishers in Group B) tomorrow at 7 p.m. ET. And it should be a defensive battle — the USWNT did not concede a single goal throughout the round robin, while Costa Rica allowed only two.
- A player to watch? U.S. midfielder Kristie Mewis, who’s scored twice this tourney, including Monday’s lone goal in a crucial win over Mexico. Can’t teach clutch.
CanWNT vs. Jamaica: As for the other semi, our northern neighbors topped Group B and will face Jamaica (second in Group A) tomorrow at 10 p.m. ET. It’ll take a big defensive showing from Jamaica to stop a strong Canada attack that’s netted nine goals through three games. Should Canada prevail, there may be some 2020 Olympics semifinal revenge in our future.
