It's national championship weekend in NCAA women's hockey
The GIST: Prep those confetti cannons — it’s national championship weekend, baby. The Frozen Four is the literal crowning moment of the women’s hockey season, and tonight, four teams will take the ice to try and advance to Sunday’s 4 p.m. ET title game. Love glory is an open door.
No. 1 seed Ohio State Buckeyes vs. No. 5 seed Northeastern Huskies, 3:30 p.m. ET (ESPN+): Northeastern has the nation’s longest active win streak with a blistering 22 straight dubs, but they have a steep hill to climb against the reigning national champs. Ohio State’s roster is as experienced as it is deep, with 10 players making their third Frozen Four appearance.
- Keep your eyes peeled for Buckeye defender Sophie Jacques and Husky forward Alina Mueller — both are finalists for this year’s Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, aka the Heisman of women’s hockey.
No. 2 seed Minnesota Golden Gophers vs. unseeded Wisconsin Badgers, 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+): Prep for an instant classic when the two most successful programs in the sport’s history (both have seven national championships) meet in the nightcap.
- These squads faced off five times this season: they drew twice, the Badgers won twice, and Minnesota took the dub when it counted, beating Wisconsin 4–2 in the WCHA semifinals just two weeks ago. Now that’s how to hit your stride.
