The GIST: Another day, another bevy of upsets in men’s basketball (MBB) and women’s basketball (WBB). Let’s catch up.
Michigan MBB pulls off a miracle: The Wolverines are having a straight-up terrible season, which made their 72–68 Wednesday win over No. 11 Wisconsin to snap a five-game losing streak all the more shocking. Hey, even a broken clock’s correct twice a day.
The No. 8 Arizona men are pushed to the limit: The Wildcats needed three overtime periods and a whopping 105 points to put away a mid Utah squad last night. Exhausted just thinking about it.
No. 16 Virginia Tech WBB sweeps No. 3 NC State: Do you get déjà vu? The Wolfpack certainly did last night when the Hokies doubled down on last month’s upset to beat ’em again — this time by 11 points on NC State’s home court.
- Virginia Tech’s dynamic duo of center Elizabeth Kitley and guard Georgia Amoore both racked up double-doubles in the decisive win, which also preserved their spot atop the ACC.
No. 15 Louisville women down No. 12 Notre Dame: Despite a record-breaking 30-point performance from freshman guard Hannah Hidalgo, abysmal three-point shooting sunk ND’s comeback attempt as Louisville ground out yesterday’s 73–66 win.
Hannah Stuelke steals the spotlight: It’s Caitlin Clark’s week, but last night, the No. 2 Iowa Hawkeyes’ true superstar was sophomore forward Hannah Stuelke, who drained a record 47 points in their 111–93 win over Penn State. There must be something in the Iowa City water.
What’s next: Other than Clark’s aforementioned attempt at history, the must-watch game of the weekend is No. 11 UConn WBB’s visit to No. 1 South Carolina at 2 p.m. ET Sunday on ESPN. Two behemoths of the women’s game in a non-conference showdown? Say less.
