Football: Saturday's top three matchups
The GIST: While Week 1 of college football served up a five-day feast, Week 2 is back to regularly scheduled Saturday programming. Time to chow down on tomorrow’s top three matchups.
No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Texas Longhorns, 12 p.m. ET (FOX): Longhorn head coach (HC) Steve Sarkisian is hosting his former Bama boss, HC Nick Saban, in the teams’ first regular season meeting since 1922.
- With the Tide’s record-holding tight end Cameron Latu back from an undisclosed illness, expect him to be a key target of QB Bryce Young. As for Longhorn QB Quinn Ewers, he’ll likely have more trouble on the field than in the parking lot this week.
No. 24 Tennessee Volunteers vs. No. 17 Pittsburgh Panthers, 3:30 p.m. ET (ABC): When the Vols kick off in Pittsburgh, it will mark the first time that an SEC team has ever played by the three rivers.
- Tennessee will be in tough against Steel City, too — Pitt is coming off a massive Backyard Brawl victory and boasts a 13-3-2 all-time record against SEC teams.
No. 20 Kentucky Wildcats vs. No. 12 Florida Gators, 7 p.m. ET (ESPN): For the first time in 40 years, the Gators could start the season 2-0 against ranked opponents…if they can tame the Wildcats.
- Kentucky HC Mark Stoops will be looking to prove his college isn’t just a basketball school, but that will be difficult with Gator QB Anthony “Are you kidding me?” Richards wreaking havoc on his defense.
