Coco Gauff wins her first-ever US Open title
The GIST: It was a historic weekend on the hard courts of Flushing Meadows, as No. 6 Coco Gauff and No. 2 Novak Djokovic were crowned US Open champions, their respective first and record-setting 24th Grand Slam victories. When in Queens, cue Queen.
Women’s: Gauff topped now-No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in a grueling three-set match on Saturday, becoming the youngest American to win the Open since her idol Serena Williams in 1999. The 19-year-old celebrated the monumental dub by calling her brother, thanking her parents, and shouting out her haters. Consider the mic dropped.
Men’s: With No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz stunningly ousted in the semis on Friday, the path was clear for Djokovic, who bested No. 3 Daniil Medvedev in a brilliant straight-sets performance yesterday, making him the oldest US Open men’s champion at 36-years-old. And with the victory, The Joker is now tied with Margaret Court for most major wins in the sport. Twenty-four and counting.
