The GIST: NJ/NY Gotham FC lived out its Cinderella story in a championship run that proved to be a fitting end to Ali Krieger’s legendary career. But once the confetti settled, Gotham supporters and players were left wondering if they’d get their fairytale ending: a fan-focused celebration like other pro franchises. Here’s how Gotham narrowly avoided an own goal after winning it all.

The plan: Gotham initially planned to celebrate its championship with a few choice appearances, including a Good Morning America segment, ringing the NASDAQ bell, and a lighting of the Empire State Building. The tour would eventually culminate in a monumental celebration leading into the 2024 season, but there was no mention of a ticker tape parade, an NYC staple.

The fan response: Since supporters often expect banner parades to celebrate champions, many started questioning if there would be an in-person event held soon. Gotham was called out by the media, fans, and even its own players for failing to have a winning contingency plan.

  • In fact, Gotham reportedly said it was surprised by the whirlwind victory, which might be the last thing any athlete wants to hear. Whomp.

Gotham’s response: Gotham apologized to fans on X last week, acknowledging that it let down the backbone of the club. In a follow-up post, the franchise pledged to spend the offseason planning events, and last Friday, there was an update: Gotham will host a celebration for fans at Red Bull Arena tonight.

The takeaway: While the NWSL has seen rapid growth over the past few years, it’s still very much in its startup phase — for some clubs more than others. Gotham may have exemplified poor postseason planning, but when fans spoke up, the club listened and reacted. A growth opportunity for all of Gotham’s citizens.
