No. 4 Texas pulls off stunning upset over No. 10 Alabama
The GIST: Week 2’s officially in the (score)book, complete with big blowouts and spicy surprises: The historically dominant SEC now has a stunning six nonconference losses, the Pac-12 is still kicking ass in its final season, and the ACC is…good? Stranger things have happened…
The biggest winners: As mentioned, No. 4 Texas launched themselves into the CFP conversation — and seven spots up in this week’s poll — with a vengeful win over powerhouse No. 10 Alabama, axing the Tide’s 21-game home win streak in the process. Cue Django.
- And while their defeat of Nebraska wasn’t a shock, No. 18 Colorado’s 36–14 Cornhusker beatdown further validated the hype around new head coach (HC) Deion Sanders’ squad. Big ups to Colorado’s defense, but the game ball goes to Peggy.
- Leaping into the Top 25 yesterday? No. 22 Miami and No. 23 Washington State, who upset then–No. 23 Texas A&M and then–No. 19 Wisconsin (hello, déjà vu), respectively.
The escape artists: Three other ranked squads avoided upsets…barely. Mayhem-maker Appalachian State took No. 20 UNC to the brink again — but this time, UNC held on for the 40–34 double-overtime dub.
- No. 12 Utah also needed a dramatic fourth-quarter surge to defeat Baylor 20–13, and No. 13 Oregon’s last-minute field goal and a clutch pick-six helped them survive Texas Tech 38–30. Whew.
