Only Michigan or Ohio State will remain undefeated after this weekend

The GIST: Max out your school spirit — it’s rivalry week, baby. With some historic intrastate clashes in post-realignment jeopardy (long live the Apple Cup, though), there’s even more drama and nostalgia in college football’s rowdiest weekend this year.
- As if that’s not enough, the regular season’s grand finale also features its most consequential matchup: The Game.
The ultimate grudge match: The stakes couldn’t be higher in Michigan’s aforementioned bout with archnemesis Ohio State. Both squads are undefeated and boast rock-solid defenses — and, crucially, there’s likely only room for one in the CFP’s final Top 4. Win, and you’re in. Lose, and your fate rests in the committee’s hands.
- Michigan’s hunting a third straight Buckeye beatdown and — despite being disadvantaged with head coach (HC) Jim Harbaugh still suspended — for the first time in five years, they’re favored to win.
The CFP picture: The CFP selection committee prioritizes undefeated records, but only Michigan or Ohio State will remain perfect after Saturday. If unbeaten No. 1 Georgia, No. 4 Washington, and No. 5 Florida State all win their rivalry matchups, either the Buckeyes or the Wolverines will need several conference championship upsets to keep their playoff dream alive.
- And if the CFP does consider a one-loss team, The Game’s loser is far from the only contender. In fact, No. 6 Oregon is the probable favorite — if they can beat No. 15 Oregon State, then avenge their only loss in the Pac-12 ’ship.
- In other words, everything’s riding on this Wolverines-Buckeyes battle. Time to ride or die.
