U.S. men’s gymnastics clinches bronze at Paris Olympics team final
The GIST: Team USA gymnastics is bringing the party in Paris, with the men’s squad finally ending a 16-year medal drought and the women favored to take the team final in just a few hours. Let’s flip to it.
American men win bronze, first Olympic team medal since 2008: The ultra-enthusiastic red, white, and blue exceeded expectations on all six events — floor, rings, vault, parallel bars, horizontal bar, and pommel horse — to capture bronze behind perennial podium powerhouses Japan (gold) and China (silver).
- The Americans were sitting in medal contention heading into their final event: friend of The GIST Stephen Nedoroscik on pommel horse. Nedoroscik’s spot on Team USA raised some eyebrows, as he only competes in pommel, compared to his five teammates who compete in multiple events.
- But the gamble paid off — after perhaps the most memed meditation of all time, Nedoroscik nailed his routine to secure the team bronze. Chills.
Jordan Chiles takes on bigger role in the women's team final: The American women’s squad sidelined 16-year-old Hezly Rivera after a shaky Olympic debut and will instead feature Chiles and Simone Biles in all four events — floor, beam, uneven bars, and vault — during today’s 12:15 p.m. ET team competition.
- Chiles’ increased workload is certainly warranted after her outstanding all-around performance in Sunday’s qualifiers, where she finished fourth overall.
- Sadly, Chiles won’t compete for the individual title due to gymnastics’ two-per-country rule, but today will be the ultimate team player's time to shine. She’s that girl, after all.
