Welcome back!
— USC quarterback and 2022 Heisman winner Caleb Williams in his announcement Monday that he’s forfeiting his remaining NCAA eligibility to enter the 2024 NFL Draft. The expected No. 1 overall pick will start his pro era on April 25th’s draft night, with a long career of slingin’ touchdowns and advocating for mental health ahead.
Basketball
🏀 Havoc on the hardwood
The GIST: Last week’s mayhem made Monday’s Top 25 lists nearly unrecognizable from the previous polls — and they don’t even account for the four upsets that went down on the men’s court last night. Amidst the ongoing chaos, here’s how the rankings have been movin’ and shakin’.
Upsets rocked five Top-10 women’s teams: The top of the poll was a bloodbath with last week’s Nos. 2, 4, 7, 8, and 10 all suffering losses. Then–No. 7 LSU and then–No. 4 Baylor took the hardest hits with Ls to unranked Auburn and Iowa State, respectively. Baylor’s eight-spot drop was extra painful — it sent the Bears out of the Top 10 for the first time since Thanksgiving.
UConn’s back, baby: Even another injury can’t keep the behemoth of the women’s game down. The No. 9 Huskies have destroyed every opponent since their December 3rd loss to then–No. 10 Texas, clawing their way back into the Top 10 on Monday following an eight-week absence.
- UConn’s men also benefited from the pandemonium: Surviving the weekend was all they had to do to claim the poll’s top spot for the first time since 2009.
Gonzaga made the wrong kind of history: The perennial men’s powerhouse is floundering this season, falling to Santa Clara for the first time in 13 years last week — a loss that killed their eight-year run in the Top 25 on Monday. At this rate, their 24-year tradition of March Madness berths could be next. Yikes.
South Carolina women stay steady at the top: Amidst the poll chaos, the Gamecocks are cool as cucumbers, holding strong at No. 1 for the ninth straight week. And thanks to an upset in LA’s crosstown showdown on Sunday, they now stand alone as the only undefeated Division I (DI) team — women’s or men’s — earning them a visit from the nation’s MVP.
Together With Topps
🏀 Gotta catch ’em all
Nothing can match experiencing iconic women’s sports moments in person, but Topps has the next best thing: their '23-'24 Bowman U Chrome Basketball collection, which immortalizes today’s most legendary women’s and men’s players.
- Dedicated to capturing today’s collegiate stars, this year’s Bowman U Chrome Basketball line is also a memento of one of the most exciting times in women’s hoops history. It’s like a physical manifestation of the momentum around the gals’ game.
- This year’s cards feature future WNBA hoopers like UConn’s Paige Bueckers and Stanford’s Cameron Brink. Get in the game and check out the new set today.
Women's gymnastics
🤸 Hit the floor
The GIST: If the basketball polls endured a shakeup, the women’s gymnastics rankings weathered a full-on 7.0 earthquake. Their Top 25 is especially volatile because rankings correlate with average meet scores, not subjective committee votes, like the AP’s. Thanks to that math — and a shiny new season — the ground is shifting significantly.
Who’s up: Michigan had a rough season start, but the Wolverines looked like the title contenders once again in Friday’s massive road win over Stanford. Grad student Sierra Brooks’ immaculate floor routine grabbed the program’s first perfect 10 of the season, helping bump Michigan from No. 20 to No. 14 in the process.
- As for the season’s late bloomers, No. 4 Arkansas and No. 7 Florida opened their campaigns with dominant wins over No. 20 Georgia and No. 12 Auburn, respectively.
Who’s down: Missouri squandered a hot start, plummeting from No. 3 to No. 12 with their loss to now–No. 3 Alabama on Friday. Elsewhere, sagging scores sent squads like No. 15 Minnesota and No. 21 Oregon State reeling, even though they won their duals (aka head-to-head matchups). There are no nights off in this sport, no matter your opponent.
❄️ Women’s rankings all but frozen
Monday’s poll drop was relatively uneventful, with one notable exception: No. 5 Minnesota are thanking their lucky stars they only slid three spots after the No. 1 Ohio State Buckeyes outscored them 13–1 (!!!) across two games — on their home ice — this weekend. They truly got Bucked.
1️⃣ Another No. 1 bites the dust
Stop us if you’ve heard this one before, but the men’s poll brought another change at the top on Monday: Boston College lost their No. 1 spot following Saturday’s 4–3 L to No. 9 Providence — the ninth lead change in the season’s 13 weeks. Sheesh.
🫘 Beanpot set to make history
Last night’s semifinals of the women’s Beanpot, an annual tourney between Boston’s top collegiate squads, didn’t disappoint: With one tight 1–0 dub plus an upset from a nail-biting penalty shootout, it’s hard to believe the most exciting part is yet to come: No. 15 Northeastern and Boston University will make history by playing next Tuesday’s final in TD Garden. New digs, who dis?
