Baby, do you like the speed?
From The GIST College Sports (hi@thegistsports.com)
Hey, hey!
If perennially mid Cal football can leverage their thriving meme culture and an impeccable Chappell Roan parody to land their first-ever ESPN College GameDay, you can make it to the weekend. Snap and clap and watch the show…
— NBA legend, beloved sports commentator, and Auburn alum Charles Barkley on college sports’ wildly unregulated NIL collectives, which funnel tons of money from powerful football and men’s basketball boosters to recruits in a de facto pay-for-play scheme. Mo’ money, mo’ problems.
Football
🏈 Cam vs. Cal
The GIST: Extra-loud stadiums, the transfer portal, and the healing power of viral memes are all shaping tomorrow’s must-watch matchups. Here’s who’s hot Ott to go in Week 6.
No. 9 Missouri Tigers (4-0) vs. No. 25 Texas A&M Aggies (4-1), 12 p.m. ET (ABC): In this week’s only ranked matchup, both squads are still catching their breath after barely avoiding upsets in their last games. The Tigers are favored, but A&M’s Kyle Field is famously tough for visitors.
No. 15 Clemson Tigers (3-1) vs. Florida State Seminoles (1-4), 7 p.m. ET (ESPN): The “We hate the ACC” Bowl could have been a blockbuster…if the once-powerful ’Noles weren’t in a full-blown death spiral — with an injured quarterback (QB) to boot. Now, instead of contending for a College Football Playoff (CFP) berth, they’re simply holding on for dear life as the Tigers come to town.
No. 10 Michigan Wolverines (4-1) vs. Washington Huskies (3-2), 7:30 p.m. ET (NBC): Yes, it’s a rematch of last year’s championship but, thanks to graduation, the transfer portal, and the departures of both head coaches, these rosters are unrecognizable from their 2023 counterparts. Notably, it’s Michigan’s first away game this season — and their first cross-country trip in the new-look Big Ten.
No. 8 Miami Hurricanes (5-0) vs. Cal Bears (3-1), 10:30 p.m. ET (ESPN): There’s one star bigger than the Calgorithm in this matchup: Heisman Trophy frontrunner Cam Ward. The Miami QB had a mixed performance in last week’s narrow win: 400 yards of total offense and five touchdowns, but three costly turnovers. He’ll need to tighten it up tomorrow if he wants to stay atop the MVP race.
Women's ice hockey
🏒 A season Primer-ano
The GIST: NCAA women’s hockey’s new It Girl is No. 2 Minnesota freshman phenom Chloe Primerano. She’s bringing massive star power to the game, but Primerano isn’t the only one to watch as the skaters take the ice for the 2024–25 season.
- Not all teams start their seasons at the same time — some dropped the puck weeks ago. But the whole gang is back this weekend and, thanks to a PWHL–driven popularity boost, they’re better than ever.
The powerhouses: For the past six years, the natty has gone to either No. 1 Wisconsin or No. 4 Ohio State. In fact, the WCHC rivals duked it out last March, with Ohio State winning the ’ship 1–0. That said, the Buckeyes began their title defense with a pair of brutal losses two weeks ago, so the Badgers are officially the early-season team to beat.
- Also in the mix are two fellow WCHC titans: Primerano’s own Golden Gophers and the team who handed Ohio State their season-opening loss, No. 3 Minnesota-Duluth. They call it the State of Hockey for a reason.
The challengers: If anyone can challenge the WCHC, it’s ECAC squads No. 5 Clarkson and No. 7 Colgate. They joined Ohio State and Wisconsin in last season’s Frozen Four, but this season, they’re aiming to hoist hardware after the final buzzer.
- Fans will know if Colgate has what it takes right away: If they’re the real deal, they’ll shake off last Saturday’s surprising overtime loss to underdog Mercyhurst and challenge Minnesota-Duluth in this weekend’s series, starting tonight at 6 p.m. ET.
What to watch: Also at 6 p.m. ET tonight on ESPN+, Ohio State’s weekend series at No. 8 St. Lawrence is a big opportunity to regain their mojo. A few losses are to be expected in hockey’s long season, but another L this early (even against a fellow Top-10 team) could signal disaster for the Buckeyes. No pressure.
- Elsewhere, No. 12 Penn State has been trying to break into the sport’s upper echelon for years, and a weekend series against No. 9 UConn beginning at 3 p.m. ET today is the perfect place to start. Let’s do that hockey!

🏑 Field hockey: No. 3 Virginia Cavaliers (9-0) vs. No. 11 Boston College Eagles (7-2) — Today at 4:30 p.m. ET — ACCNX
- Virginia’s one of just four remaining undefeated Division I teams, but maintaining that status will require some serious weekend work: After facing the hot-streaking Eagles today, UVA will cap things off with a 12 p.m. ET matchup against No. 16 Louisville on Sunday.
🏐 Women’s volleyball: No. 11 Oregon Ducks (11-1) vs. No. 3 Penn State Nittany Lions (13-1) — Tonight at 7 p.m. ET — BTN
- Former Pac-12 powerhouse Oregon sailed through their first Big Ten matches, easily beating Indiana, Illinois, and Ohio State. But a road game against the elite Nittany Lions is a whole other animal — one that could make or break their rep in their new conference.
⚽ Women’s soccer: No. 1 Arkansas Razorbacks (9-0-1) vs. No. 7 Mississippi State Bulldogs (9-1-0) — Tonight at 7 p.m. ET — SECN
- Arkansas is the first SEC squad to snag the poll’s top spot since 1998 — before any of their current players were born. Their reward? A Top-10 road match against the surging Bulldogs. Gotta beat the best to stay the best.
⚽ Men’s soccer: No. 10 James Madison Dukes (5-0-3) vs. No. 5 Marshall Thundering Herd (7-1-1) — Tonight at 7:15 p.m. ET — ESPN+
- The Sun Belt is one of the sport’s most competitive conferences, boasting these two heavyweights (alongside No. 7 West Virginia). Expect a defensive battle: Both rank in the Top 10 for lowest average goals allowed.
