Tunnel vision
From The GIST Sports Biz (hi@thegistsports.com)
It’s Wednesday!
And the TV numbers for UConn and South Carolina’s Big Dance are in. This year, the NCAA women’s basketball title game drew 8.5M viewers for its third-highest viewership ever, only behind last year and 2023 when Caitlin Clark–led Iowa teams drove sky-high numbers.
- Plus, interest in the women’s bracket surged dramatically once the Final Four was decided: Google searches for women’s March Madness rose 75,966% in the tournament’s final week compared to a 14,861% rise in interest on the men’s side. Mad world.
PWHL
✨ Tunnel vision

The GIST: Since the beginning, the PWHL has been intentional in its development, from signing a CBA before the puck dropped to nabbing early broadcast and founding partners. One of those decisions — a deal with software company Greenfly — has provided insight into how athlete engagement behaviors can shape sponsorship, especially amid the growth opportunity of tunnel walks.
- We spoke with leadership from the PWHL and Greenfly this month to learn more about how capturing these pregame moments and sharing digital assets empowers athletes and brands. So many reasons to celly.
The partnership: Before its inaugural draft, the PWHL worked with Greenfly to organize its digital assets for athletes. During the season, Greenfly’s tech auto-tags players in photos, and athletes are immediately able to download their photos for social media. Nearly all PWHLers have used the platform, and the average downloads per player are 4x higher compared to similar pro leagues.
The results: Since athletes are posting to social media and cultivating engagement, brands featured in these photos are building up their sponsor media value (SVM) thanks to increased exposure and engagement. Greenfly told The GIST that PWHL athletes tend to post pictures of their pregame outfits during their tunnel walk, an experience that is being monetized across sports.
- Woody Creek Distillery sponsors the PWHL’s tunnel walk, while Sephora supports the tunnel walk for Unrivaled. While the WNBA doesn’t have one singular sponsor, its description as a “fashion runway” underscores the marketing opportunity.
Zooming out: While the NBA, NFL, and WNBA have pivoted to include tunnel walks in their storytelling, they’re still a relatively untapped market in sports sponsorship considering the high athlete engagement. While pro leagues are catching on, there’s still plenty of sponsorship opportunities at the player and team level, especially with women’s sports fans being very online.
- They’re also a way for brands to organically associate with women athletes — some of the most powerful influencers out there — and relate to fans through genuine lifestyle content. That is how a majority of Gen Z fans connect with sports, anyway. Doing it for the plot.

🌴 Tampa expects bigger economic impact for hosting women’s Final Four compared to 2008
According to the Tampa Chamber of Commerce, the estimated economic impact of hosting this year’s Final Four and championship rounds will be more than $30M. That’s a little less than the $32.9M generated in Cleveland last year, but significantly higher than the $19M Tampa gained from hosting the same rounds for the women’s tournament for the first time in 2008.
💸 Another EPL club considers sale of women’s team to reduce losses
Following up on our Monday story about Chelsea’s sale to its subsidiary, Aston Villa is exploring a majority stake sale to comply with the EPL’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules. According to those rules, clubs can only lose $134M over a three-year period, which Aston Villa is on track to exceed after posting a $249M loss over the past two seasons.
- By breaching this limit, EPL clubs could have points deducted or, in more extreme cases, face fines and potential relegation. Ouch.
📱 Northern Super League (NSL) inks deal to broadcast on ESPN+
The professional Canadian women’s soccer league — which kicks off its inaugural season next week — will now be able to reach U.S. audiences thanks to a new, multiyear media partnership with ESPN. In the deal signed Monday, ESPN+ will stream over 40 NSL matches, including select playoff matchups and the championship game.
- This adds to ESPN’s existing U.S. rights for the UK’s WSL and the NWSL, making the network a global hub for women’s soccer. However, the iconic FIFA Women’s World Cup won’t be on ESPN after Netflix snagged the rights for the 2027 and 2031 tournament.
⚽ NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman says the league can match the NFL by establishing 32 teams. Alive and kicking.
🇨🇦 The NSL has signed 132 players to team rosters, with nearly half of its 87 Canadian players returning to the country from professional leagues abroad.
⛰️ Denver’s NWSL team became the fastest team to hit 10K season ticket deposits in league history.
⭐ Billie Jean King earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame as the first woman to do so in the Sports Entertainment category. Feel just like a rockstar.
🤝 Credit One Bank extended its title partnership with the Charleston Open through 2031 and will offer equal prize money to players starting in 2026.
🏐 LOVB Icons — the volleyball league’s All-Star voting program — received more than 74K votes from fans worldwide in the league’s inaugural season.
🎟️ The Golden State Valkyries clarified that only 5% of its first 10K season tickets went to current Golden State Warriors ticket holders. Holding their own.
